The story started around 79 years
ago, (in 1941) with Shri Ganga Bhishen Agarwal, when, it was all started with
making only bhujia’s in house and now became, the most recognisable famous
brand around the globe. It was all started with one man in a small retail sweet
and namkeen shop in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. At the age of 12, Ganga Bhishen Agarwal spent his days in Bikaner
inventing a snack which is very famously today known as, Haldiram’s Bhujia.
Slowly, he was doing some creativity with that bhujia. He changes the main
ingredient of bhujia with moth ki Dal (a type of lentil) which was used to be
made of besan (chickpea flour), the moth ki dal is easily available in
Rajasthan. His, main focus was on to make the fine crispy bhujia and with low
fat. He also named it ‘Dungar sev’ after Dungar Singh, the popular Maharaja of
Bikaner.

One small shop to Building
Haldiram Empire.
Later, as his business slowly and
steady started growing. He was selling as much as 200 kilos of bhujia every
week. There were a few problems on initial days when he was about to begin his
Haldiram Empire. Ganga Bhishen Agarwal fondly called as Haldiram by his mother,
when he went to Kolkata to attend a wedding ceremony and that time he was not
knowing that his life would change forever, which gave him an idea to think to
open a shop in Kolkata and that was first branch out of the Bikaner bhujia
business. They setup the branch in Kolkata in order to expand the business in
1970. However, the grandsons Manoharlal and Shiv Kishan took the business to Nagpur and Delhi. The Chandi Chowk shop in Delhi created a huge massive impact
on customers about Haldiram’s. Then, came manufacturing plants in Delhi and as
well as Nagpur.
When Haldiram empire has been
built, they think to open Haldiram restaurant in major cities of India as well
as over-seas. The company came forward and to be divided between three distinct
areas of operation with Delhi-based Haldiram snacks and cultural (Ethnic) foods in
northern-region, Nagpur based Haldiram foods international with western and
southern region and smaller Kolkata based Haldiram Bhujiawala in eastern
region. These, how the Haldiram Branch expanded across the India and Globe.
When Ganga Bhishen Agarwal has
started a small retail shop in Bikaner, Rajasthan. He wouldn’t have imagined
that one day Haldiram’s products will sell across globally and it would be generating
Rs.5000 crore in annual revenue. Now, currently Haldiram produced more then 400
products. It offers all different categories of Veg frozen food, various types
of Namkeen snacks, lot of variety of sweets and Haldiram Restaurant offers all
ethnic food.
It was all started with
laying stone at one small Namkeen shop and
today, it has achieved milestones. Their dream of doing
something big turned out to be the Haldiram’s today. This
was all about the story of Bhujia to building a Brand Haldiram Empire.
While the Haldiram Brand is
thrilled that Manohar Lal and Madhusudan have debuted in top 100 Richest Indian
on the 2019 Forbes India Rich List[1].
