What to say about Paneer Butter Masala! It is one of the most loved paneer gravies which is loaded with cream and butter. Moreover, it is the king of north Indian curries and one of the most prominent Punjabi curries which are preferred by most vegetarians and served by millions of restaurants across the globe. However, today I will share the step-by-step recipe of the paneer butter masala which can be prepared for lunch or dinner and served with freshly tandoori roti, naan, laccha paratha, or homemade chapati.
Here, I am sharing the recipe without garlic. You can add garlic as per your choice.

What are the Ingredients that are needed to make
delicious Paneer Butter Masala?
- 1 tbsp Ghee
- 2-3 tbsp Butter
- 1-3 Bay leaf
- 4-5 Cloves
- 2-4 Green Cardamom
- 1 tbsp Cumin
- 1-inch Ginger
- 2 nos. Green chilly
- 5 nos. Tomato (Sliced)
- 3 nos. Onion (Sliced)
- 12-18 Cashew
- 1 small bowl of curd
- 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilly powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 1/2 cups of water for boiling the gravy
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 200-300 gm of paneer
- 2 tsp sugar or honey
- 1 tbsp dried fenugreek leaves
- Fresh Coriander leaves.
For those, who are trying their first time cooking just follow my simple yet tasty recipe to make restaurant-style paneer butter masala at home. You are just a few steps and 40 – 45 minutes
away to enjoy the creamiest, mildly sweet, and smoothest homemade paneer butter masala.
- In a bowl add 1 bowl of curd, Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and butter, and mix everything properly and keep aside for further use.
Preparing the Gravy
- In a Kadai, heat the ghee and butter and add cumin, bay leaf, cardamom, and clove. Let cumin pop up or crackle it up. Then, add ginger and green-chilly and sauté it for a while on low flame until it turns aromatic. Additionally, add sliced onions and sauté them until translucent.
- Now, add the curd mixture and continue the cooking for 2-4 minutes or until it’s aromatized or the raw flavor of the curd has gone.
- Then, add sliced tomatoes, cashew nuts, and salt and gently mix them and sauté it for 2-3 minutes on medium-high heat.
- Add the water above the level of onions and tomatoes and then cover the Kadai, and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft.
- Once the onion tomato masala is ready, cook off the flames, let it completely cool down, and then grind it into a fine paste using a hand blender or mixture grinder and the paste is ready.
- Pass the curry to the filter sieve to get rid of seeds and skin. Yours smooth and silky, the tomato-onion paste is ready. keep aside for further use.
- In a Kadai, heat the butter and add chopped onion, sauté until translucent, then add Kashmiri red chilli powder then sauté for about one minute.
- Now add chopped tomatoes and cook until it
releases oil from it and pour the prepared smooth and silky gravy into the
masala.
- Now add water to make your gravy thick as
per the consistency you want.
- Simmer your gravy for 5 minutes.
- Add paneer cubes, dried fenugreek leaves,
butter, and honey or sugar.
- Add salt to taste.
- Add fresh cream to the gravy after turning
off your gas and mix everything properly.
- Lastly, add freshly chopped coriander and
mix well.
- Finally, your most delicious dish is ready to serve, with roti or paratha.
